Background

The Salvation Army started on the streets of East London in 1865 when Methodists William and Catherine Booth began to encourage both social and spiritual transformation among society's most vulnerable and marginalised people.

Today, The Salvation Army is a church and charity that is active in virtually every corner of the world and serves in more than 130 countries and has nearly 6,500 employees.

The Salvation Army are committed to developing a culture of learning where employees can engage in personal and professional growth that transforms their own work and that of their team, service and the wider Salvation Army. They believe that coaching is a powerful tool to bring about change and transformation.

Aim of the Program

As officers and employees of The Salvation Army, mission is at the heart of all that we do, but it can come at a cost and present challenges that will stretch each of us. The Coaching Programme aims to provide all officers and employees with a safe space to engage in empowering and challenging conversations that lead to greater personal effectiveness. As well as being available to all officers and employees across the organisation, the Coaching 'offer' is also incorporated into specific Learning & Development interventions, such as leadership development programmes.

Our Solution

PLD developed a specific coaching platform that was configured to allow coachees to choose specific areas that they wished to be coached on and the style of coaching that they preferred. The Learning and Development team then use this information to allow platform admins to easily match coachees to the most suitable coach for them.

The platform incorporated standard PLD features such as the ability to book coaching sessions, hold video conversations and to keep session notes within the platform, as well as including some of the Salvation Army's own specific coaching assets, such bespoke evaluations forms.

Results

Since its initial soft launch the platform has facilitated over 100 coaching requests, making the coaching matching process much quicker and simpler than previously. Feedback from users has been very positive with coachees confirming that they have found the coaching experience very beneficial.

The platform has enabled admins to be able to easily track how many meetings are being booked through the platform, at what stage of the process each coach and coachee are, when first meetings have happened, when final sessions have been completed and monitor the effectiveness of these sessions.
